Algoma's defensive play leads them past Colfax to claim the Division 4 state title

After leading 22-20 at halftime Algoma turned up the pressure on defense went on to beat Colfax 46-30 to claim the Division 4 state championship. 

There were eight lead changes and the game was tied 5 times in the first half. Algoma junior Kennedy Blahnik had 9 points and 4 rebounds for the Wolves while junior Braanna Steen led Colfax with 9 points at the break. 

Algoma held Colfax to only 10 second half points. The Vikings also turned the ball over 11 times in the second half and the Wolves were able to score 5 points off those turnovers.

Colfax was able to hang with Algoma for the first half but turnovers and being unable to knock down shots in the second half was the difference.

For the game Algoma shot 38% from the floor and made 13 of 20 free throws. Colfax made 30% of their shots but only connected on 1 of 16 shots from behind the arc. 

Blahnik scored a game high 17 points and added 9 rebounds. Freshman Baleigh Delorit finished with 9 points and 4 steals while senior Taylor Schmidt added 7 points, 4 steals and 2 assists. 

Steen scored a team-high 12 points and added 7 rebounds. Junior Mallie Doucette was held to 4 points on 2 of 8 shooting, she led the Vikings in scoring with nearly 12 points per game coming into the game. 

Algoma's last state championship came back in 1986. The Wolves finished as the Division 3 runner-up in 2011.
