More than 60 athletes put their skills to the test on Saturday at the Brookfield House of Speed Combine at the Brookfield Indoor Soccer Complex. Many of the players expected to perform well did exactly that, but there were some under the radar athletes that opened some eyes as well.

After checking in and visiting with WisSports.net staff for the Media Day portion of the event (more than a dozen video interviews will be posted at a later date), players went through NFL-style combine drills consisting of:  40 yard dash, Pro Agility, L-Drill, Bench Press, Vertical Jump, and Broad Jump.

Following the testing, positional specific drills were conducted by House of Speed staff to put the players in a competitive situation and 1-on-1 opportunities.

A dozen college coaches from Division 2 and Division 3 programs were in attendance to take it all in and identify prospects.

At the conclusion of the camp, staff selected MVP's at each position as well as an overall MVP. Those players were:

Overall & WR - Christopher Cooper, University School of Milwaukee, 2014
QB - Alex Mendoza, Saint Thomas More, 2014
RB - Logan Yeager, Dodgeville, 2014
OL - Jacob Maxwell, Greendale, 2014
DL - David O'Gorman, Watertown, 2014
LB - Alvin Burris, Milwaukee Lutheran, 2016
DB - Bryce Juedes, Homestead, 2014

Several players opened some eyes on the 40-yard dash track. Watertown junior wide receiver Aaron Kumbier, a highly productive First Team All-Conference choice last year, ran the fastest time at 4.50. Under the radar junior running back Trevis Miller of Madison Memorial went 4.51. Other sub-4.6 times were recorded by:  Nick Holcomb, 2014 WR, Germantown (4.52); Kameron Lau, 2014 LB, Germantown (4.53); Bryce Juedes, 2014 DB, Homestead (4.54); Eric Wade, 2014 RB, Homestead (4.54); and Jameson Brock, 2014 WR/DB, Wauwatosa West (4.57).

Over at the vertical jump station, University School's Chris Cooper wowed those in attendance with a leap of 39.5 inches. Close behind was Dodgeville's Jason Gullickson at 38.5 inches. Cooper also recorded the best broad jump mark by a long ways at 10 feet, 7 inches.

The pro agility drill is a great measure of quickness, balance, and change of direction ability. Homestead's Bryce Juedes had the best time of 4.13 seconds, followed closely by Jameson Brock of Wauwatosa West. Aaron Kumbier was at 4.19 while Gavin Grant from Madison Memorial went 4.20. Grant also had the best L-Drill time of 6.96 seconds.

Below are observations of WisSports.net Football Writer Travis Wilson on some of the top performers of the event.

Quarterbacks

Saint Thomas More junior Alex Mendoza was selected as the top QB by the combine staff. While a bit undersized at 5'10", he throws a nice ball and can do so on the run. Brandon Toman played behind Joe Ferguson at Madison Memorial the last two years but saw action in several games as Ferguson dealt with injuries and an early season suspension. Toman has good size at 6-3, 180 and displays a strong arm and ability to make any throw necessary. He's one to keep an eye on for a breakout season in 2013.

Running Backs

Logan Yeager was the leading rusher for Dodgeville last year and made an impression at the House of Speed Combine staff, who named him MVP at the position. He tested well and excelled in the running back drills where he showed good footwork and agility. Eric Wade, a junior from Homestead, recorded some very good times and was solid in the drillwork. He will step into a much larger role in the Highlanders' backfield this fall. Tom Rose of Port Washington didn't get a lot of carries in the fall, but the 2015 prospect was impressive in Brookfield, showing explosion and agility.

A trio of Madison players made solid impacts. RaQuan Cunnigan of Madison Memorial is a physical back that also shows nimble feet. Teammate Trevis Miller is light on varsity experience and a bit slight of build right now, but has outstanding explosion and a frame that could add some good weight. Marquise Pollard of Madison West is a jitterbug of a running back, measuring just 5-6, 140 pounds, but is very quick and elusive.

Wide Receivers

One of the top groups at the combine, several players displayed the skills to be Division 1 prospects. Christopher Cooper from University School of Milwaukee was named the wide receiver and overall event MVP. He certainly needs to add weight to his 6-0, 165 pound frame, but his athletic ability is outstanding and he shows a natural ability as a receiver. He had the best marks in the vertical (39.5") and broad jump (10-7), along with solid times in the 40, pro agility, and L-drill.

Aaron Kumbier of Watertown was highly productive last year and has good size at 6-0, 175. Saturday he measured and tested exceptionally well, which should help open doors to scholarship opportunities. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash time of 4.50 and the second fastest pro agility drill. Kumbier is a natural pass-catcher and runs precise routes. Likewise, Germantown junior Nick Holcomb has a good frame at 6-2, 180 and displayed outstanding athletic ability, including a 4.52 40-yard dash time.

Jameson Brock from Wauwatosa West is a versatile player as a receiver and defensive back, and showed very good athletic ability on Saturday. Andrew Catteruccia of Johnson Creek and Marcus Gabriel of Newman Catholic are long athletes with solid frames that did themselves well in Brookfield. Dodgeville's Jason Gullickson was a pleasant surprise, with good size at 6-3, 185 and impressive times in the testing. He also showed his explosive ability with a 38.5 inch vertical jump.

Offensive Line

A relatively small group of offensive linemen included a couple of players that stood out. Jacob Maxwell, a 6-6 275 pounder from Greendale, was one of the most impressive players in attendance at any position. In the line drills he showed good feet and used his size to overwhelm his opponents at time. He needs to work on his hand placement, but has a nasty streak to him and is a guy that will generate D1 interest over the coming weeks.

Jake Burkard earned First Team All-Conference honors for Whitnall and showed why on Saturday. While not the biggest or most athletic lineman, he is tenacious and stays on his defender.

Defensive Line

A very nice group of d-line prospects was in attendance for the Brookfield Combine. Several performed very well, but none stood out more than Watertown junior David O'Gorman. At 6-2, 212 pounds he does need to get bigger to hold at the point of attack against larger offensive linemen, but his athletic ability is outstanding. He ran 4.69 in the 40-yard dash, a broad jump of 9 feet, 1/2 inch, and a vertical of 30.5 inches. He showed that athletic ability translated to the field in positional drills and was also able to use his hands to keep his opponent off his body and get penetration.

David Pfaff from Homestead is just a sophomore but saw plenty of action for the D2 state champions last year. He already has a solid frame at 6-3, 228 pounds and showed good athletic ability in the testing and position drills. Jason Erdmann is another 2015 prospect that stood out. He was a First Team All-Conference pick for Slinger last season and has good size at 6-6, 320. He needs to work on his athletic ability but has good strength and is one to watch.

Kameron Lau of Germantown is a bit undersized at 6-1, 190 but what he lacks in bulk he makes up for in overall athletic ability. He ran 4.53 in the 40-yard dash, had one of the better pro agility times at 4.25, and showed explosion with a 9-2 broad jump and 33 inch vertical.

Cody Marienthal of Menomonee Falls and Bryan Honerlaw of South Milwaukee showed good strength as defensive tackle prospects.

Linebacker

Alvin Burris of Milwaukee Lutheran is just a freshman but showed he's ready for the big-time with an MVP performance at the House of Speed combine. He showed good athletic ability and was smooth in the positional drills. Grant Haase of Watertown, Derek Wiedmeyer of New Berlin Eisenhower, and Nicholas Schulze of Catholic Memorial also had solid showings.

Defensive Back

Bryce Juedes of Homestead was clearly the top defensive back at the combine and one of the top 3 or 4 individuals in attendance overall. He played considerably at outside linebacker last season and may line up there this year, but his college future is at safety. He is well-built at 5-11, 195 pounds and has very good athleticism, running a 4.54 40-yard dash, the fastest pro agility at 4.09, and dominating in the positional drills.

Khan Balushi, a junior safety from Green Bay Southwest, was one of the top performers as well. He showed fluid hips in coverage and a determination to stick with his receiver. Gavin Grant is a sleeper prospect. He needs to get bigger but was very explosive in the individual testing, including the best L-drill time of 6.96 seconds.
