A big week one rivalry game does not come along very often and to have it come down to the very end is even rarer. In the end, the visiting Mondovi Buffaloes (2-0) came out on top of the Durand Panthers (1-1) at Wayne Field.

The first score of the game was a pass from senior quarterback Tyler Gruber to junior Wide Receiver Caleb Grochowski. After the pump fake, Caleb was wide open for the 53 yard touchdown! The panthers failed the 2 point conversion.

After another Panther TD, it was Mondovi’s time to come back. With only seconds left in the first half, Senior QB Zach Ganschow threw a hail mary which was tipped by the defense, but right into Mitch Stamm’s hands! After a missed conversion, the Panthers still had a one score lead going into halftime.

Then Mondovi had to score again or it was all over for them. After continuously running the ball without being stopped, the buffaloes made their way into the red zone! Since the Panthers couldn’t stop the run game, Brett Vetterkind tied the game up with his 7 yard run. After that, Mondovi made the first successful 2 point conversion of the game giving them a 14-12 lead with 7 minutes left in the game.

The Panthers then keep throwing the ball trying to score, but on fourth down they fell a bit short of the first down marker. After the change in possession, all Mondovi had to do was kneel to run out the clock.
