WisSports.net Week 5 Player of the Week Nominees:

Matt Ferris, Xavier -- Normally we do not nominate a player more than once during a season, but after what Ferris did in Week 5, he goes up again after being selected in Week 2. In a 64-14 win over Ripon, Ferris broke the single-game passing touchdowns record with 8 scores. He finished the game 24 of 36 for 420 yards and 8 touchdowns and added 27 yards on the ground despite not playing in the fourth quarter. He has 28 touchdowns on the season and is on pace to shatter the single-season record of 40.

Nick Mehlum, Superior -- Superior moved to 5-0 on the season with a 27-20 win over Rice Lake on Homecoming, doing so in dramatic fashion as they rallied from a 20-6 third quarter deficit. Mehlum came up big all game, completing 17 of 27 passes for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding 11 carries, 46 yards, and a score on the ground. His 4-yard scoring scamper with 53 seconds left proved the game-winning play.

Kollin Neils, Plymouth -- Neils is a three-year starter for head coach Dan Knaus, throwing for more than 1500 yards with a combined 35 touchdowns his first two years. He's managed to improve his game even more as a senior, with Friday's record-setting performance in a 41-6 win over New Holstein serving as a great example. He completed 16 of 18 passes for 4 touchdowns and a school-record 305 yards as the Panthers remained unbeaten in Eastern Wisconsin Conference play.

Brett Snider, Lancaster -- Lancaster's Brett Snider has been a key performer for the Flying Arrows since his freshman season, and has expanded his game considerably this season. In a 62-20 win over SWC challenger Dodgeville, Snider threw a 10-yard touchdown pass, returned a kickoff for a 75-yard touchdown, ran for a 34-yard score, and caught a 75-yard touchdown...all in the first half.

Chris Van Straten, De Pere -- There are unlikely heroes and then there is De Pere's Chris Van Straten. A member of the soccer team at the school, he decided to come out for football after the team's punter went out with an injury in Week 1. He also took over the kicking duties, and on Friday night drilled a game-winning 37-yard field goal as time expired for a 30-27 win over Pulaski to move the Redbirds to 3-1 in the FRCC.
