EDIT: The WIAA has released the OFFICIAL Playoff Qualifying Field and it matches up exactly with what we had. To view the WIAA's listing, please click here. The WIAA is expected to release the regional groupings later this morning.
And it's here. The playoffs. With all Week 9 games in the books we can look at who is in the playoffs, and who is out. The field is now official.
Based on scores reported to WSN, 217 teams finished with conference records at or over .500 and thus qualified for the playoffs. That means like last year, we have teams under .500 in the postseason. Last season there were four such teams, this year there are seven.
The teams to finish under .500 in conference but over .500 overall are: Bangor, Brillion, Chilton, Hillsboro, Martin Luther, Port Edwards, Random Lake, Stevens Point, Wauwatosa West, and Wisconsin Dells. But there are only seven spots for those teams.
Following WIAA tiebreaker procedures, we look at "combined won-lost percentage (conference games only) of conference opponents they have defeated". Basically it rewards teams that beat better teams in their leagues.
By that criteria, here are the teams that make it into the postseason along with their tiebreaker number:
Bangor 0.3809
Wauwatosa West 0.2777
Hillsboro 0.2380
Port Edwards 0.2000
Brillion 0.1904
Chilton 0.1904
Those six teams fill six playoff spots, leaving Martin Luther (0.1428) and Stevens Point (0.1428) tied for the final spot. When down to two teams, the next tiebreaker we look at is record versus playoff field. By virtue of wins over postseason qualifiers D.C. Everest and Wausau West, the Panthers of Stevens Point get in over Martin Luther, whose lone victory over a playoff team came against Milwaukee Madison.
Random Lake (0.1000), and Wisconsin Dells (0.1000) join Martin Luther as missing out on tiebreakers.
We thus have our 224 team field. Below are the lowest enrollment number in each division are below along with past cutlines.
