MacKenzie Schill of the Pewaukee girls basketball has been selected as the WSN Athlete of the Week for the week of December 23 through 29 after a statewide vote on WisSports.net.

There were 6529 total votes cast this week, with Schill receiving 2850 of them. Logan Geisness of Waukesha boys hockey finished with 2842 votes in one of the closest Athlete of the Week polls in our history.

Schill helped the Pirates pull off one of the biggest upsets of the young season in the championship of the Oak Creek Holiday Tournament. Trailing by 9 points with three minutes to play against Division 1's top-ranked team Oak Creek, Pewaukee found a way to turn up the pressure and outscore the Knights 14-4 over the final minutes for a 42-41 victory. Schill scored 10 of her 12 points in the final quarter, and hit the game-winner on a driving layup with 6 seconds left. She added 7 points in the opening game of the event, a 60-22 rout of Muskego.

Remember, the only way your favorite player can be named WSN's Athlete of the Week is to vote and spread the word. Nominations can be sent to norbert.durst@sportngin.com. Look for next week's nominees to be posted on Sunday evening.
