WIAC Athletes of the Week

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jack Martinek, Junior (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale), Guard of UW-Eau Claire
In two contests during the week, Martinek averaged 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 58% from the floor, 71% from behind the arc and 83% from the free- throw line.  He had a double-double with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Blugolds’ 64-57 win over UW-La Crosse on Feb 17. Martinek was 7-for-13 (54%) from the floor, 1-of-3 (33%) from behind the arc, and a 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. In a 59-53 win over UW-Whitewater, Martinek was 7-of-11 (63%) from the floor, 4-of-4 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 (75%) from the charity stripe. He took over the second half of the UW-Whitewater game, scoring 15 of his game-high 21 points. With the win against the Warhawks, the Blugolds secured the No. 3 seed in the WIAC tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Brynn Liljander, Junior (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), Guard of UW-River Falls
Liljander helped lead the Falcons to their first WIAC regular season championship since 1989 with a pair of victories during the week. She averaged 17.0 points per game and had a game-high 22 points against UW-Oshkosh. Overall, she was 6-of-7 (.857) from the free throw line, 11-of-27 (.407) from the field and 6-of-13 (.462) from the three-point arc. Against UW-Stout, Liljander was strong on defense having five steals and six defensive rebounds.
