2016 Girls Basketball Tournament wrap-up with WisSports.net All-Tournament Team

The 41st WIAA Girls' State Tournament was held at the Resch Center in Green Bay. 

Three of the five state champions won their first state title in program history: Verona in Division 1 (4th state appearance), Hayward in Division 3 (3rd state appearance), and Mineral Point in Division 4 (1st state appearance). 

New Berlin Eisenhower won their second state championship, winning the Division 2 title in their fifth state tournament appearance. The Lions also captured the D2 state title in 2010.

Assumption won their second state title, beating Barneveld in the Division 5 title game who they have played in the title game in each of the past four years. The Royals have made five state tournament appearances and also won the D5 title in 2013. 

State Tournament Records Broken

Gena Grundhoffer of Assumption broke the WIAA Division 5 State Tournament record for points in a tournament with 55 and points in a game with 35. She set the Division 5 record for free throws made in a state tournament appearance with 25 and attempted with 27, while also setting the D5 record for free throws made in a game with 17. Grundhoffer also set the Division 5 state tournament record for consecutive free throws, making 13 straight free throws over their two games. Gena broke her own record of 91.7 percent from the free throw at the state tournament by shooting 92.5 percent over the two games. 

Madelyn Neff of Hayward set the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament Record for most free throws made with 26 and attempts with 28. 

Verona broke the WIAA State Tournament Field Goal Percentage for all Divisions by shooting 77.1 percent against Appleton North in a Division 1 state semi-final, eclipsing Oak Creek's previous record of 67.6 percent against Superior in 2014.

Chelsea Brackmann, sr., New Berlin Eisenhower: Brackmann helped the Lions capture their second state title in school history. She finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks in their win over Notre Dame in a D2 state semi-final. The Bradley recruit totaled 10 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists in their win over Stoughton in the championship game. 

Bre Cera, sr., Mukwonago: The Iowa recruit finished with 23 points, including going 11-for-12 from the free throw line in their win over Oak Creek in a state semi-final. Cera was stellar in the championship game, totaling 25 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals despite the Indians falling to Verona. Cera helped the Indians to three state tournament appearance, including two Division 1 state runner-up finishes in her career. 

Sidney Cooks, jr., Kenosha St. Joseph: Cooks led the Lancers to a Division 4 runner-up finish in their first trip to state. She finished with 30 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists in their loss to Mineral Point in the title game. Cooks, a Division 1 prospect, totaled 21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 blocks in their win over Marathon in a state semi-final. 

Gena Grundhoffer, sr., Assumption: Grundhoffer helped the Royals win the Division 5 state title, their second title in four years. The Lehigh recruit scored 20 points in their win over Barneveld, 62-45, in the championship game. Gena scored 35 points in their state semi-final win over Fall River on Friday, setting the single-game Division 5 state tournament record.

Alex Luehring, jr., Verona: Luehring helped the Wildcats win their first state title in program history, finishing with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in their 52-46 win over Mukwonago in the Division 1 championship game. The UW-Green Bay recruit went 4-for-9 from behind the arc in the victory. Luehring totaled 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in the Wildcats' win over Appleton North, 69-41, in a state semi-final. 

Madelyn Neff, soph., Hayward: Neff helped the Hurricanes win their first state title, she finished with 24 points (15-16 on FT's) and added 10 rebounds in their 43-31 win over Milwaukee School of Languages in the Division 3 championship game. She scored 23 points, including hitting a pair of free throws with 6.2 seconds left to lift the Hurricanes past Madison Edgewood 50-49 in a state semi-final. 

Jessica Schultz, sr., Mineral Point: Schultz helped the Pointers to their first state title in school history. The Northern Michigan recruit finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks in their victory over Kenosha St. Joseph in the Division 4 state championship game. Schultz compiled 16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocks in their win over Regis in a state semi-final.  

Sydney Staver, jr., Mineral Point: Staver helped the Pointers to their first-ever state title, finishing with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in their win over Kenosha St. Joseph in the championship game. She went 7-for-7 from the free throw line and made 3 of her 5 three-point attempts in the win. In their state semi-final win over Regis, Staver tallied 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting with three triples. 

Tayla Stuttley, jr., Onalaska: Stuttley was terrific for the Hilltoppers in their loss to Stoughton in a Division 2 state semi-final. She finished with 30 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals while shooting 12-for-14 from the free throw line. 

Morgan Rachu, sr., Marathon: Rachu was terrific for the Red Raiders in their loss to Kenosha St. Joseph in a Division 4 state semi-final. She finished with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals while shooting 8-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from behind the arc. 

Hannah Whitish, sr., Barneveld: Whitish was named Miss Basketball by the WBCA on Saturday morning and finished with 24 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks in their loss to Assumption in the Division 5 state championship game. The Nebraska recruit complied 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in the Golden Eagles win over Clayton in a state semi-final.
