WIAA State Girls Volleyball: Division 1 Quarterfinals Recap

Menomonee Falls 3, Greendale 0

Menomonee Falls cruised to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-20) victory over Greendale in a Divison 1 state quarterfinal on Thursday. Menomonee Falls never trailed at any point in the match and jumped out to large leads in all three sets. Greendale did manage to pull it within 1 in the 1st set and 3 in the 3rd set. Mackenzie Robertson lead Menomonee Falls in kills with 13, followed by Ashley Guenveur with 9, and Ebun Olapo with 7. Coming in as the underdog with a 16-21 record, Greendale struggled to find its groove attacking, only putting up a .033 hitting percentage. Sophomore, Nicole Martin, lead Greendale in kills with 8. Menomonee Falls will face Burlington on Friday night at 7:00pm in a Division 1 state semifinal.

Burlington 3, DSHA 2

Burlington won a 5-set thriller (13-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-12) over the back-to-back defending state champion, DSHA, in a Division 1 state quarterfinal. Burlington took some time settling into the match; with only a .037 hitting percentage in the 1st set, it appeared that DSHA could cruise to a win over the Demons. Burlington flipped the switch though and quickly turned the momentum towards their side. The Demons took early leads in the 3rd and 4th set and never looked back. Down 5-9 in the decisive 5th set, Burlington head coach, Teri Leach, called a timeout. The rest is history; Burlington went on a 10-3 run to finish the match and move on to the state semifinal. Burlington had tons of depth and were lead by Abby Koenen (21 kills), Alyssa Turzenski (14 kills, 25 digs), and Kaley Blake (45 assists, 15 digs). DSHA senior, Katie Rolfe, ended her career with an impressive showing (23 kills, .455 pct.). Burlington will face Menomonee Falls on Friday night at 7:00pm in a Division 1 state semifinal.

Sun Prairie 3, River Falls 1

Sun Prairie took down River Falls 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-17) in a Division 1 state quarterfinal on Thursday night. After dropping the 1st set, Sun Prairie junior and Louisville commit, Claire Chaussee, proceeded to tally 6 kills in the 2nd set. River Falls jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the 3rd set, but the Cardinals clawed their way back and eventually tied the set at 20-20. Claire Chaussee had to set-winning kill to give Sun Prairie a huge comeback victory in the 3rd set. Sun Prairie took a 4-0 lead in the 4th set and controlled the rest of the match. River Falls was lead by freshman, Halle Olson, with 18 kills and 11 digs. Sun Prairie used a balanced attack; Kelsey Kopiske (14 kills), Claire Chaussee (18 kills), and Kielyn Kapugi (18 kills) all contributed double-digit kills for the Cardinals. Sun Prairie will face Neenah on Friday night at 7:00pm in a Division 1 state semifinal.

Neenah 3, Appleton North 2

Neenah held off Appleton North 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 21-25, 15-8) in a highly competitive Division 1 state quarterfinal match on Thursday night. Neenah jumped out to a quick 2 set lead on the Lightning. Appleton North managed to win the 3rd and 4th set, forcing a 5th set. Neenah finished the 5th set with a .550 hitting percentage with 0 hitting errors. The Rockets were lead by Addie Barnes (22 kills), Hope Werch (23 kills), and Mikayla Butts (52 assists). Appleton North junior, Mikaylah Van Lanen, finished with 30 kills and a .426 hitting percentage. Maddy Ahrens (50 assists), Carissa Beyer (39 digs), and Jenna Miller (15 kills) also had impressive nights. Neenah will face Sun Prairie on Friday night at 7:00pm in a Division 1 state semifinal.
