Division 5 Girls Basketball Semi-Final Notes: Black Hawk and Bangor advance to the title game

Black Hawk scored the first 14 points of the game and cruised to a 57-31 win over Newman Catholic in a Division 5 state semifinal to advance to the championship game on Saturday. 

The Warriors led 26-9 at the half and built a 26-point lead with 9:27 left and they ended up winning by that margin. 

Freshman Bailey Butler finished with a game-high 17 points, and added 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists for Black Hawk. 

Sophomore Natalie Leuzinger tallied 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Fellow sophomore Hannah Butler contributed 9 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for the Warriors. 

Newman Catholic was led by sophomore Julia Seidel who scored 11 points and added 6 rebounds. 

Black Hawk finished with 19 steals in the game and just 5 turnovers. The Warriors shot 33.3 percent from the field. 

Newman Catholic turned the ball over 26 times in the game and shot 27.5 percent from the field. 

The Warriors ended up taking 22 more shots than the Cardinals. 

Black Hawk will face Bangor in the Division 5 state championship game on Saturday. The Warriors are in search of their first state title in program history. 

Bangor edged Clayton in a Division 5 state semifinal, 57-54, to advance to play Black Hawk in the state championship game on Saturday. 

Bangor jumped out to a 24-9 lead to start the game before Clayton went on a 13-5 run to end the half.

The Cardinals pushed their lead to 10 points to start the second half, but Clayton battled back and took a brief 43-42 lead with 6:49 left after a three-pointer by Alison Leslie. 

Bangor answered with a three by Courtney Osterle with 6:34 left and led the rest of the way. 

Clayton stayed in the game with its three-point shooting and had chances to tie or take the lead, but couldn't convert. 

Emma Wittmershaus made 1 of 2 three throws with seven seconds left to give Bangor a 57-54 lead and a three-pointer by Kailey Ketz was off and the Cardinals escaped with a win. 

Senior and UW-Milwaukee recruit Emma Wittmershaus finished with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, and added 2 blocks and 2 steals for Bangor. 

Senior Ariana Hundt contributed 11 points for the Cardinals. 

Clayton was led by junior Alison Leslie who finished with 23 points. Fellow junior Kailey Ketz tallied 20 points, and added 4 assists and 4 steals. 

Bangor shot 50 percent from the field for the game, while Clayton shot 43.2 percent. 

Bangor turned the ball over 19 times, compared to Clayton's 9. 

The Cardinals move on to play Black Hawk in the Division 5 state championship game on Saturday. Bangor is looking for its first state title since 1997.
