Some historic performances highlighted the winners of the 2018 WSN Cup awards.

Arrowhead's dominance of the Large Schools Division continued, as the Warhawks claimed an 11th trophy in the 11 years of the award. Edgewood got back on top of the Medium Schools Division after a one-year hiatus. Buoyed by state titles in the marquee sports of football, boys basketball, and girls basketball, Bangor is the first public school to win the Small Schools Division.

The WSN Cup is in its 11th year, recognizing schools that provide and achieve success in many of the WIAA sponsored sports. The award totals points earned in both boy's and girl's sports. All current WIAA sponsored sports with the exception of summer baseball are included as part of the scoring for the award.

Large School Division

It comes as no surprise that after trailing both Middleton and Sun Prairie following the fall sports, Arrowhead rallied in a big way to run away with its 11th WSN Cup Large Schools trophy in the 11 seasons of the award.

The Warhawks' cumulative total of 953.5 points was well ahead of the closest challenge, Sun Prairie, who finished with 679 points. It is the third-highest total in WSN Cup history, behind last year's Arrowhead group (1015.33 points) and the 2014-15 edition of the Warhawks (96.33 points).

The Warhawks scored 364 points in the spring season, the most of any school, getting at least 20 points in all seven spring sports. That included runner-up finishes in baseball and boys golf, along with strong showings in boys tennis, boys track, and girls soccer.

The lone state title won by an Arrowhead team this year was the girls golf squad last fall. Boys soccer took a runner-up finish as well. Of the 23 WIAA sports included in the WSN Cup standings, only the boys hockey team failed to score any points.

Congratulations to the Arrowhead Warhawks and Athletic Director Ryan Mangan.

Sun Prairie (679 points) came in second in the Large School standings. The rest of the top five of the Large Schools Division was Middleton (623.86), Muskego (514.33), and Marquette (510).

Medium School Division

Madison Edgewood's huge spring sports season allowed the Crusaders to move ahead of Whitefish Bay to claim the 2018 WSN Cup Medium School trophy. It is the sixth WSN Cup title for Edgewood, who also claimed the award in 2008-09 and 2009-10 plus a three-year run from 2013-2016.

The Crusaders got state titles from boys golf and boys tennis along with strong showings from girls soccer and girls track & field. In the fall, the girls swimming & diving team claimed a state title as well, while the girls golf team finished as runners-up. The boys swimming & diving team also finished second during the winter season.

Edgewood's cumulative point total was 619.36, the fourth-highest number among all schools.

Congratulations to the Crusaders and Athletic Director Chris Zwettler.

Last year's Medium Schools trophy winner, Catholic Memorial, finished in second with 556.16 points. The rest of the top five consisted of Whitefish Bay (516.5 points), Notre Dame (441.82), and Rice Lake (427.22).

Small School Division

For the first time ever, a public school has claimed the WSN Cup Small School trophy. Bangor became the first school of any size to win state titles in football, girls basketball, and boys basketball, and that success helped the Cardinals make history.

That alone would not have been enough, and a tie for second at the boys state track & field meet along with a solid showing by the girls track team helped secure things. Bangor finished with 497 points overall.

Congratulations to the Cardinals and Athletic Director Kevin Kravik.

Two-time defending champion Aquinas finished in second place with 453.09 points, while the rest of the top five consisted of Regis (362 points), McDonell Central (355.33), and Lake Country Lutheran (347.5).

Congratulations to the winners and a great job by all the teams during an outstanding and exciting 2017-18 sports season.

Look for the WSN Cup to appear in the winning schools' trophy cases this fall.
