Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 10 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Well baseball season is officially over here in the state of Wisconsin and only a little under a month is left of the high school football season. With that being said, college football is just hitting its stride.

Ever since setting foot on the University of Wisconsin campus, Alec Ingold has been a touchdown machine for the Badgers. The former Bay Port high school quarterback and current fullback added to his career total by tallying a rushing and receiving score in the Badger’s 49-20 win over Illinois. Ingold now has 19 career touchdowns and is averaging a score once every 5.37 times he touches the ball. Defensively, Matt Henningsen (Menomonee Falls) and Zack Baun (Brown Deer) each recorded their first career sacks for the Badgers.

For the second straight week, Christian Almonte has made a huge play on special teams for UW-Stevens Point. Almonte, another Menomonee Falls graduate returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown while also notching a receiving score in the Pointer’s 31-27 loss to UW-Stout. That return led to Christian being named the WIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second week in a row. His teammate, Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp) had 12 tackles, a sack and returned a fumble 16 yards for a touchdown.

The defensive touchdowns weren’t isolated to just one game in WIAC play this past weekend. Carmelo Rosado accounted for three turnovers for UW-Eau Claire in their 40-16 win over UW-Platteville that was aided greatly on the defensive side by in-state alumni. The Beaver Dam alum had five tackles, recovered a fumble, and had two interceptions. He returned that second interception 45 yards for a score en route to being named the WIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Teammate Sam Romanski (Wausau East) added on to his season total by tallying two more sacks to bring his WIAC lead to 11. Trevor Nelson (St. Croix Central) had nine tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery, while Sam Burzynski (Stanley-Boyd) had six tackles and an interception.

UW-Oshkosh helped stifle UW-La Crosse’s offense in their 24-13 victory. Cole Yoder (Oshkosh West) had six tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble while Kollyn Beyer (Mount Horeb) intercepted a ball. Derrick Jennings Jr. (DeForest) recorded his WIAC-leading fourth interception while also tallying four tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.

As defense appears to be the theme in this week’s version of the Alumni Round-up, Trae Waynes may have put together his best defensive effort this season in the Minnesota Viking’s 37-17 win over the New York Jets. The Kenosha Bradford graduate hauled in his first interception of the season while adding another four pass break ups.

Sean McGuire has already broken the career passing touchdowns and career passing yards records at Western Illinois. In Saturday’s 31-14 win over Missouri State, the former Franklin High School standout broke the career completions record while throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns.

Fifth ranked Minneosta Duluth was aided to a 37-17 win over Winona State by many players on the defensive side of the ball. Alex Helmer (Prescott), Michael Kirkendoll (Whitefish Bay), and Tom Johnson (Xavier) all recorded a sack, while Mitchell Johnson-Martin (La Crosse Central) had a tackle for loss, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.

It may not be a defensive highlight, however Casey Bednarski was perfect kicking the ball for Minnesota State-Mankato in their 47-20 win over Bemidji State. The Oconomowoc grad went 4 for 4 on field goals, including a season-long 55-yarder. He was named the Northern Sun’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Sioux Falls offense has been near unstoppable this year in the Northern Sun Conference. They currently lead the NSIC in rushing yards per game (292.9), rushing touchdowns (28), and are second in total yards per game (476.9). A lot of that is due to the offensive line. Nick Zimmerman (Laconia), Elijah Perine (Homestead), and Nolan Kern (Regis) all start on that line and paved the way for another 500-plus yard outburst in Sioux Fall’s 55-21 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead.

Dwayne Lawhorn was a two-sport standout at Germantown High School. He was named honorable mention all-state in football his senior year, while being awarded the WSN Defense Award for basketball. Currently, Lawhorn is leading the St. Cloud State offense at quarterback. This past weekend, he threw for over 250 yards and four touchdowns as the Huskies beat Upper Iowa, 34-14. Backfield-mate Gregory Lewis (Wauwatosa West) rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown.

Steven Doran has been a touchdown machine for the Drake University football team. This past weekend he had six catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-17 win over Dayton. Another Germantown High School graduate, Doran has eight touchdowns on the season, and three multi-touchdown games.

The quarterback position is primarily known for passing the ball in the game of football. Cormac Madigan and Ripon College are not going by the status quo in that regard. A week after rushing for 281 yards, the Laconia High School graduate rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns in Ripon’s 58-34 win over Macalester College. Madigan currently leads the WIAC in rushing yards (775), rushing touchdowns (13), and yards per carry (10.3). His teammate, and Almond-Bancroft alum, Austin Bunders compiled 60 yards of rushing and a score. Bunders is fifth in the Midwest Conference in rushing yards (456) and third in rushing touchdowns (7).

Former Abbotsford High School standout Garrett Rau does a little bit of everything for Knox College. He starts at safety and is also the punter for the team. In addition, he has also thrown the ball and rushed a few times on the offensive end. In Knox’s 20-6 victory over Illinois College, Rau did most of his damage on the defensive side as he recorded eight tackles and two interceptions on the day.

As Northern Michigan demolished Lawrence Tech 65-7, Isaiah Wright got to take advantage of some playing time for the Wildcats. The Milwaukee Bay View graduate went 4 for 4 and threw for a touchdown, while also accounting for a score on the ground as the freshman saw his first extended action.
