Aquinas' Bronson Koenig has been selected as the top senior Defensive player as part of the WSN Senior Boys Basketball Awards.
Up to the challenge of guarding outstanding perimeter players such as Onalaska’s Matt Thomas and Dominican’s Duane Wilson, Koenig proved his immense ability to slow down opponents with his athleticism, length and desire. Also a truly outstanding point guard, Koenig impressed people throughout the state this winter with his ability to become a lock-down defender for coach Rick Schneider and the Blugolds.
In two games against high-scoring Onalaska guard Matt Thomas, Koenig was the primary defender for the Blugolds. Thomas scored 18 and 12 points respectively in the two games (he averaged 28 per game on the year) and had two of his poorest shooting performances of the season.
The ability to defend certainly bodes well for Koenig’s chances of getting on the floor early in his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin. He averaged more than 2 steals per game for Aquinas this season.
Finalists for the award were Koenig, Deiondre Cunningham of Wisconsin Lutheran, Montrell Hobbs of Milwaukee King, Sam Murphy of Royall, and Erick Tunell of Superior.
Zak Showalter of Germantown received the award last season.
