The second meeting of the WIAA's Ad Hoc Committee to address competitive equity issues was held on August 3rd and 4th, with progress made towards narrowing down the possible solutions facing the WIAA. At the end of the meetings, the committee had selected three options to focus on and for further study.
The committee was born from the public/private debate that came to a head this spring when an amendment for a 1.65 enrollment Multiplier for all private schools was placed on the WIAA Annual Meeting agenda. The member schools voted to send the issue to committee instead.
A review of the first meetings can be found here. At those first meetings, following discussion of the issues and challenges, the group identified ten possible solutions for further study. Two committee members were assigned to each option to investigate further, collect pertinent data, and present their findings.
A six-page summary of the Committee's most recent two days of meetings was sent to all WIAA schools this morning and obtained by WSN.
Each possible solution was presented to the group, with 10 minutes of time given to highlight three key areas: what is attractive about the plan, what are concerns, and questions that remain about the plan. After that 10 minutes, 10 minutes of discussion amongst the group was allowed. In addition to the original solutions discussed at the earlier meetings, three additional ideas were added.
The committee identified a criteria for determining which options should be chosen for further study. The following is the criteria used:
Using that criteria, the committee selected three options for continued study:
1. Reducer based on free & reduced lunch numbers
2. Long-Term Success Factor
3. Boundary (geographically limited, open enrollment, sports specific multipliers)
To read more info and details on each of those options, please see the original committee summary posted above.
At least one committee member will be present at all seven WIAA Area Meetings in September to provide information and updates on their progress.
The next meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee will be Wednesday, October 1st in Stevens Point.
