Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

In what can only be described as a breakout sophomore year, Kenosha Bradford’s Melvin Gordon continued his dominance. Gordon compiled 261 total yards, including 196 rushing in the San Diego Charger’s 43-35 win over the Titans. He also added a touchdown to make his season total 11, leading all position players in the NFL.

Wausau East’s Logan Taylor and D.C. Everest’s Jared Pankow put up big numbers of their own for UW-Stevens Point. The two wide receivers combined for 18 catches, 309 receiving yards, and 4 touchdowns in the Pointer’s 35-28 win over UW-Stout.

Elsewhere in the WIAC, Chad Walton (Franklin), C.J. Blackburn (Waukesha North), Dylan Hecker (Winneconne), and Mitch Gerhartz (Hortonville) combined for over 300 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown each in UW-Oskhosh’s 51-29 win over UW-La Crosse. Ryan Weber from Holmen high school had a game high 17 tackles for La Crosse.

Colin Buck of UW-Whitewater was named the WIAC’s Defensive Player of the Week. The former Franklin athlete had 3 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble in the Warhawk’s 27-20 overtime win against UW-River Falls.

Ashwaubenon graduate Emmit Carpenter continued his great season for the Minnesota Gophers. The kicker went 3 for 3 on field goals, including 2 over 50 yards, and 5 for 5 on extra points in the Gophers’ 44-31 win over Purdue. That performance earned him Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.

The University of Wisconsin’s 21-7 win over Northwestern was again aided by breakout junior Jazz Peavy. The Kenosha Tremper alum had 119 total yards and a touchdown for the Badger offense. Conor Sheehy (Marquette) made one of the more pivotal plays early in the fourth quarter. The defensive lineman ran down the Northwestern quarterback and caused a fumble which was recovered by the Badgers.

A couple of wide receivers from the state added onto their already impressive years. Madison Memorial’s Jester Weah had 115 receiving yards and a score in Pittsburgh’s 51-28 loss to the University of Miami. Also, Beaver Dam’s RJ Shelton had 80 receiving yards and a score in Michigan State’s 31-27 loss to Illinois.

Drake University got big performances from two in-state wide receivers in their 31-27 win over Jacksonville. Steven Doran (Germantown) recorded his first ever receiving touchdown, while Grant Menard (Whitefish Bay) had 142 receiving yards.

In Northern Sun play, Zach Dodge (Wilmot) had 5 tackles and 2 sacks in Minnesota State Mankato’s 41-30 win over Wayne State. Jake Schley (St. Thomas More) and Jake Brazee (Neenah) both recorded a sack in St. Cloud State’s 31-0 win over Minot State.

Kyle Burlingame threw for 2 touchdowns in Carroll University’s 28-21 win over North Park. That performance made the Waukesha North alum the all-time leader in touchdown passes at Carroll.

After seeing more action the past few weeks, Northern Illinois’ Jackson Abresch made a bigger impact this past weekend. The Arrowhead defensive back recorded his first interception in the Huskies’ 45-20 win over Bowling Green.

Dezmen Morse went and had himself a day for Lakeland College in their 55-25 win over Aurora University. The Wisconsin Dells’ alum had 175 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns for Lakeland.

The Midwest Conference’s performers of the week were highlighted by a few Wisconsin athletes. Ryan Grandlic (St. Mary’s Springs) and Garrett Rau (Abbotsford) were both honored. Grandlic had an astounding 26 tackles for St. Norbert College in their 38-14 loss to Monmouth University. Rau had a do-it-all kind of afternoon for Knox College in their 33-27 win over Lawrence University. He punted twice for 84 yards, while also performing a fake punt for a first down. He also recorded a tackle and the game sealing interception on Lawrence’s last possession.
