Wisconsin Sports Network and WisSports.net are happy to announce Franklin's Max Alba as the 2017 recipient of the Dave Krieg Award as the most outstanding senior quarterback in Wisconsin, part of the WSN Senior Football Awards.

Alba has started full-time the last two seasons after seeing his first action as a sophomore. He led the Sabers to a state runner-up finish last year, throwing for 2,544 yards and 29 touchdowns in 11 games.

He's been just as good this season, with 2,259 yards and 25 touchdowns, adding six rushing scores as the Sabers finished 11-2. A Division 1 prospect on the gridiron, he chose to sign with North Carolina for baseball.

"I think he is the best quarterback in the state," said head coach Louis Brown. "In my mind Max is a Power 5 quarterback. The issue is he is probably going to get drafted in baseball and had many Division 1 offers in baseball as well. He is also an All-Conference basketball kid. There just aren't too many kids that could get money to play at the next level in three sports."

Finalists for the award were Alba, Ben Dunkleberger of Lake Mills, Cade Garcia of Whitefish Bay, Jonah Kahl of Turtle Lake, and Alec Ogden of Monona Grove.

Past winners of the award include Oshkosh West's Trey Demler (2009), Franklin's Lance Baretz (2010), West De Pere's Jay Tollefson (2011), Watertown's Tarek Yaeggi (2012), Xavier's Matt Ferris (2013), Brown Deer's Zack Baun (2014), Amherst's Garrett Groshek (2015), and Kimberly's Danny Vanden Boom (2016).

The award is named after Dave Krieg, a graduate of D.C. Everest High School who went on to star at Milton College and later in the National Football League. Krieg ranks in the Top 12 in NFL history in career pass attempts, completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his 12-year career.
