Edgewood wins its second WIAA state title in program history, earning a comeback win over Xavier in the D3 championship game

Edgewood is WIAA state champions for the second time in team history. 

The Crusaders earned a 55-52 comeback win over Xavier in the Division 3 state championship game. 

Edgewood trailed the majority of the contest, including by five (49-44) with 5:05 remaining before they ended the game on an 11-3 run to secure the victory.

Freshman Anna Miller (5-8) scored a game-high 20 points, including 18 in the second half to lead the Crusaders’ come-from-behind win. She added six rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Also reaching double-figures for WBCA Hall of Fame coach Lora Staveness and the Crusaders was junior Erin Schauer (5-9), who tallied 14 points and added seven assists and two assists in the win. 

Xavier was led by senior Carsyn Stempa (5-7), who netted 16 points and added seven rebounds, two assists, and four steals. 

Freshman Elle Krull (5-8) contributed 11 points for the Hawks. 

The game included five lead changes and was tied on two occasions. Xavier led for 31:23 of the contest while Edgewood led for just 3:10, taking the lead for good with 2:44 left. 

Xavier ends the season with a 22-8 record, reaching the WIAA state tournament for the third time in program history, and taking home its second silver ball. 

Edgewood finishes the year with a 27-3 record, winning its second WIAA state championship in the team’s third trip to the state tournament.
