The third time is a charm for Pewaukee. 

The Pirates knocked off three-time defending Division 2 state champion Notre Dame, 60-52, in the state championship game after falling to the Tritons in the title game the previous two seasons. 

Pewaukee did not trail in the victory, jumping out to a 12-2 lead early in the game. The Pirates’ lead got to 11 points before Notre Dame went on a 9-0 run to get back into the game. 

The Pirates answered with a 6-0 run to end the first half and led Notre Dame, 32-26, at halftime. 

The run continued to start the second half, hitting 16-0 after a 3-pointer by junior Amy Terrian with 15:37 remaining to give Pewaukee a 42-26 lead. 

Notre Dame went on a 26-11 run to cut the lead to one, 53-52 after a steal and layup by senior Trista Fayta (5-8) with 2:31 remaining. 

Pewaukee scored the final seven points of the game. Junior Kennedy Retherford (5-9) scored to push the lead to 55-52 with 2:11 left. The Pirates sealed the win at the free throw line;  sophomore Giselle Janowski (5-8) made three of four and Amy Terrian went 2-for-2. 

Janowski finished with a game-high 20 points. She shot 6-for-11 from the floor and went 8-for-10 on free throws while adding two assists, three steals, and two blocks for the Pirates. 

Terrain, a Michigan State recruit, also had a great game for the Pirates, tallying 18 points. She went 5-for-9 from the field, 4-for-8 from deep, and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Amy dished out a team-high six assists and added a steal and a block. 

Junior Kennedy Retherford (5-9) netted 14 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for coach Jim Reuter and the Pirates. 

Notre Dame was led by senior Trista Fayta (5-8), who finished with 13 points, five rebounds, three steals, and a block. 

Sophomore Kaia Waldrop (6-0) tallied 11 points and five rebounds, while senior Sydney Whitehouse (5-8) and junior Peyton Musial (6-0) each scored 10 points for coach Sara Rohde and the Tritons. 

Notre Dame ends the year with a 28-2 record, both losses against Pewaukee by identical scores in the first and last game of the season. The Tritons’ senior class went 114-5, winning three gold balls and one silver ball during their historic run. 

Pewaukee finishes the year with a 29-1 record, winning the state title in the program’s fourth appearance. 
The Pirates went undefeated against in-state teams, including beating Division 1 state champion Arrowhead (80-61) at the end of the regular season. 

Pewaukee is 83-7 over the last three seasons.
