Session 2 - Division 1

03/06/2008, 1:00pm CST
By Nicholas Kartos

Adam - 6:16 pm

I would agree with the questioner. Also, I bet that was the rollercoaster. We in Monroe used to do a different kind of rollercoaster - very Will Ferrell SNL-esque. But that is neither here nor there.

Great game though. On the court, and in the seats.

Rick Hamilton - 4:39 PM

Are you talking about the roller coaster, Krebs? The "sit-down-and-move-around-thing with vocals" could refer to a lot of activities.

A question was raised on the message board regarding facial hair and referees' tendencies to call more fouls on scruffy players. I have no response.

Adam 4:31 pm

OW fans pull out the student led sit-down-and-move-around-thing with vocals. I liked it. Much better than the rowboat... Lots of energy at the end of that. Best cheer all day.

Adam 4:29 pm

Gtown s student section looks like someone just ran over their dog. The third quarter is not even done yet….

Maybe Bower s 3 and Doeden s 3 will wake them up….

Then again, Maas's 3 was killer, and OW got really loud...... Maybe a three-peat is possible after all?

Rick Hamilton - 4:21 PM

I'm so out of touch with you kids and your crazy music, I couldn't tell the difference. Now, if it was Hall & Oates, I would've known.

Good to see both student sections actually cheering for things going on in the game instead of trying to upstage each other.

Adam - 4:14 pm

The OW dance team, who placed 8th in state, is really rockin the house party on Dayton. Not only can they jump, twist and twirl, but they can breakdance and sing along with the lyrics to the rap song at hand.

I think the dance competition is over…….

….As for Germantown s squad…. They are working the poms and cheerleading outfits quite well (compared to the dance outfits of every other team). I will venture to say there is 25ish girls on this squad, dancing in unison to… is that Cher? Shakira? I need to look into my "good music" dictionary to figure that one out. Rick could tell you what it was, though.

The dance was good, but I think OW has 1st place in the BCL dance competition tournament.

As of right now:

1. OW

2. Memorial

3. Badger

4. Germantown

5. I-S

In the fans halftime extravaganza of cheers, Gtown did the usual "sit down and sway to the leader".

OW is starting the rowboat. 15 seconds in and I ve seen better from smaller schools. Will they be fishing soon? Wow. Rowboat lasted maybe 30 seconds… Not nearly as impressive as the YouTube version… Someone call the AD. There needs to be a school rally to work on the rowboat. For all the hype, I m a little disappointed……

Adam - 3:52 pm

These two student sections are really duking it out. West attacked Gtown, but Gtown came right back. From "Double digits" to "Second quarter," Gtown has held their own over a crowd twice the size.

I will tell you what, I m impressed by the leaders of Gtown s student section. They appear to be writing on a big marker board which cheers are coming next, and their cheer squad has done a few pyramids. West on the other hand has stuck mostly to the basics. Though there is some creativity, more noise needs to be made. Someout there please text these fans to make some more noise. I can still hear the announcer at times….

Rick Hamilton - 3:35 PM

For those of you who are regulars to the Blogness (Blogulars?), it's not that I haven't been keeping track of how many xylophones a band has, I just don't think we've seen a xylophone yet. I could be wrong though, I already forgot who won each game today afterall.

Adam - 3:31 pm

Oshkosh has by far the biggest student section thus far, though Germantown does pack a bit of a punch.

Each team did the daily "We are the Titans" chant. It s getting a bit old, though that might be because I ve heard 18934097 times today already.

Oshkosh s students have been really loud, mostly with "ooooh s" and "De-fense." However, with Leonardo and Donatello of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on their side, its hard to believe their student section won t rock the house.

Also, Germantown s crowd, though standing, has been a bit silent - only a few cheers here and there.

Rick Hamilton - 3:30 PM

West brings only one Wildcat mascot, at least so far. But they do have two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Donatello and Leonardo, I believe.

Rick Hamilton - 3:20 PM

You can count on a couple things everytime West plays a game at state. Brad Clark will be the best dressed guy in the building, their student section will be doing some sort of black-out, white-out, etc., and maybe, just maybe they'll bring two Wildcat mascots. Also that might be the best saxophone-playing hot dog I've seen in many years. Germantown is countering with someone in a gorilla suit. Nice effort, but it really doesn't pass mustard like a hot dog suit.

Nicholas - 3:00 PM

FYI - the hot dog in the Oshkosh West band plays the saxophone.

Nicholas - 2:59 PM

With 46 ticks left and the subs in it is safe to say that Memorial passed their first test.  Jeronne Maymon had something along the lines of 28 points, 12 boards, 8 blocks and 5 steals.  Not a bad day at the office.

Time to turn the attention to the next D1 matchup - Germantown v Oshkosh West.  Two solid big men match-up - John Benkoske of Oshkosh West and Ben Averkamp of Germantown.  I think the big men neutralize each other and Gtown guards end up being too much for Oshkosh West to handle.  But then again, magic seems to happen when the Wildcats are in the Kohl Center.

Adam - 2:55 PM

After a Kevin Wieters dunk (that follows a vicious Devonte Maymon slam), Jeronne Maymom met the lanky Badger center with a smile and a pat on the back.

Also, the block call on Zach Adams was questionable at best from down here. It looked like a genuine charge. But the call stands.

And as far as the student sections go, JMM has all but left with the score 75-61 JMM. And Rick is right about the banana man....

Rick Hamilton - 2:45 PM

There's a guy dressed in a banana suit in Memorial's student section, but the problem is that he's in the row third from the top. If you're dressed as a fruit, you need to get a better seat.

Adam - 2:34 PM

After a huge momentum shifting Derek Nkemnji dunk, MM busts out a "hoop, there it is" chant. Then, just as in the game prior to this one, the MM students pulled out "We are the Titans" chant. Badger follows weakly, and JMM announces in pure rhythmic form, "We can t hear you."

I love student sections.

Rick Hamilton - 2:30 PM

"Basketball Jones" Jimmy Merritt is living up to his accidental nickname with 15 points halfway through the third. Game tied at 41.

The Badger Badger is much more active than Memorial's mascot, who might just be bored from being here all the time in the last couple years.

Adam - 2:20 PM

MM s dance squad looked good. Badgers danced to…. Eminem? Energetic dance routine, not as energetic of a song. However, the mix of songs worked out well. The MM kids appeared to have dug it.

All I have to say is…. Bring It On.

EDIT:: I just got a text message, Kirsten Dunst is on her way to Madison to challenge both schools to a dance off.

Adam - 2:13 PM

I was a little confused with MM s tactics during a late free throw… 3/4ths of the students sat down, and half of them lightly paddled the back of the seats for the first free throw. Then, for the second, two kids stood up. After the shot was made, everyone else stood up….. Impressive comeback for Badger on the court. Once down 10, then they brought it back to 3. Now down 5 at the half. I love games like this. Now it s time for the 80+ cheerleaders to dance on the floor….

Nicholas - 2:10 PM

Badger had Jeronne Maymon just how they wanted him towards the end of the half - on the bench in foul trouble.  They went on a nice little run and got the ball downlow to the post and converted some easy buckets.

Nicholas - 1:58 PM

Memorial is playing at a different speed right now.  They have had quite a 5 year run but the more I see this team play the more I think this might be their best yet, and that is saying a lot with the likes of Keaton Nankivil, Wesley Matthews, Michael Nelson, Jarard Ajami and Kori Vernon being a part of those past squads.

Adam Krebs - 1:53 PM

Playa4Life asks: Do you guys generally cheer for the under-dog, or the team expected to win?  What are your biases for this years tournament?

As a journalist, I have no biases…. Except for the fact that my alma mater, Monroe, will be playing at the Kohl tomorrow. There s my lone bias……

On a side note, Jeronne Mayman can block like it's nobodies business, and each school's student are very loud. However, MM chants every possession, Badger just screams after a basket. I'm also partial to the "300" cheers from MM

Rick Hamilton - 1:45 PM

The Badger Badgers bring a Badger mascot that doesn't infringe on the copyright of the UW Badger. This Badger's indigenous to the sidelines!

Adam Krebs - 1:35 PM

Star Spangled Banner update: Memorial's student section had a nice sounding band. The song was truely as nice with the melodic singing coming from the Spartans crowd. Literally half of them were singing. Good form, Jack.

Also, the Mighty Spartan is in attendance. I'm waiting for Bucky to waltz in and start a fight.

Adam Krebs - 1:31 PM

So I'm now sitting courtside, across from the Memorial bench. I love the MM students in their "whiteout" outfits, which range from jersey's, Under Armour gear, T-Shirts and toga's. Badger is sporting a huge band, and tons of kids as well. I can't wait for this noise.....

Rick Hamilton - 1:20 PM

Thankfully the person that made the "Basketball Jones" mistake is no longer with the company. We do try to make our errors as hilarious as possible though.

Nicholas Kartos 12:53PM

Two questions for the bloggers (from NirvanaFan#1):

1) a: Which of the D3 winners looked more impressive to you this morning and b: which would be your pick to take the title on Saturday?

2) Which of the D1 quarterfinalists do you expect to look the best going into the semifinals tomorrow?

1) - check out Session 1 blog

2) - that is a tough question.  I would usually say Memorial without putting much thought to it but when they are playing a Forrest Larson coached team all bets are off.  The next two games after that I think are toss ups so I will go with Tosa East because I think their athleticsm, depth and versitility will be too much for Eau Claire North.

Speaking of Memorial v Badger this one could be fun.  Coach Collins joked with reporters yesterday that they could set the record for combined points in a state game (180 - Milwaukee Lincoln 109 vs La Crosse Central 71, 1967).  If Badger is hitting their threes and if they try and run up and down with Memorial he might be right.

A couple of notes on Badger, I know it's been mentioned on the message boards, but yes add about 2-3 inches to all the heights in the program for the Badger guys.  Forrest used to do this with his Ladysmith teams as well, I am assuming for some psychological edge perhaps.

Jimmy Merritt has had an outstanding season and I would like to apologize for publishing a picture of him in the yearbook with the name "Basketball Jones" under it.  We had all our headshots named but we had a handful that we didn't have identified.  The person that was helping us with layout wasn't really a 'sports' person and put the headshot in with the name not really thinking twice about it. Hopefully it has turned into a great nickname.
