Tony Scallon will get a chance to carry on a tradition he grew up admiring after being named the head coach at Mayville.  Scallon graduated from Mayville high school in 1997, has taught in the district for the past six years and has been a varsity girls assistant to Brent Ellington the past five seasons.

"This a great honor for me being a part of the basketball tradition here at Mayville," Scallon said.  "I grew up here watching great players, being molded and motivated by great coaches who in turn inspired me to give back and respect the hard work it take to be successful; not just on the court but in the community.  This job has always been a dream of mine to obtain and maybe I can build those values of life that the past Mayville coaches instilled in me."

While Scallon grew up in Mayville, he cut his teeth at UW-Stout as a student manager for four seasons and assistant coach from 2003-2005 for Ed Andrist.  He attributes his influences from to places.  "From my experiences of working with a number of coaches throughout the states: John Muraski, Joe Carello, Ed Andrist, Mark Thomas, Kari Carello, and Mark Knoll or as my time as a student at Mayville High School: Bob Blair, Jim Kasmerik, Jon Nedelcoff, Stu Strook, and Wm Brett Ellington, they have all had a strong influence on the style of play and what I will teach on the court at Mayville."

A tradition rich program on the hardwood, with 7 state tournament appearances and a Class B state championship in 1983, Mayville has fallen on hard times of late.  Since longtime head coach Jon Nedelcoff left after 14 seasons in 2006, the Cardinals have gone 35-54 under Mark Sindberg (2006-2008) and Stu Strook (2008-2010).

"People still recognize our school district as a place with good athletics, education and extracurricular activities.  I feel that the past few years inexperience and key player injuries was a big reason the record was the way it was.  But the effort, preparation, and the will to win was never ever a question with the basketball program."

Mayville returns just three varsity players next season in Brandon Waas (6-3, SR), Spencer Stellmacher (6-1, JR) and Brandon Schultz (5-10, SR).  Scallon is ready for the challenge though, "Hard work, dedication, and trust are going to be the cornerstones in maintaining this basketball program and from there we will see what happens."
