University School Boys Hockey – Eight teams were part of the three day RBC Wealth Management shootout in Milwaukee in between Christmas and New Years.  Four of the teams came in with winning records and Arrowhead, Cedarburg and Brookfield made up the top 3 in the Journal Sentinel’s area rankings.  Seven of the eight teams came into the tournament with at least one win.  University School of Milwaukee was not one of those seven.

They didn’t just make a splash, they went for a cannonball and won the tournament.

They went a three game run culminated by a 4-2 victory over defending state champ Arrowhead.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, it’s good to point out that Wildcats faced a traditionally strong Fondy team, the #1 ranked team in the state in Wausau West and two tough teams out of Minnesota in the early going of the season.

But back to the tournament, they started it off skating to a 1-1 tie with rival Marquette.  The game was then decided by a sudden death shootout after the three skater shootout came to a tie as well.  USM junior Aaron Storch was successful where Marquette’s Dave Baker was not and USM moved on to the next round.

The next game against Cedarburg was a 2-2 tie after 2 periods when senior Alex Tesensky intercepted a pass 2:28 into the third and cashed it in for a 3-2 lead.  That ended up being the margin of victory with Tesensky and junior Simon Leahy ending up with 2 points a piece.

In the title game Tesensky was up to the challenge once again scoring two goals in the first four minutes.  The Wildcats held the lead throughout and came out with 4-2 win and the RBC Title.

Honorable Mention

Julie Raeder, Oostburg – Raeder, is a three sport star and a well known entity in the Wisconsin girls high school basketball landscape.  Facing a tough Sheboygan Falls team, Oostburg was on the verge of losing their third game on the young season - down 5 with a minute to go.  Raeder hit a contested three to pull within two and with four seconds left in the game calmly hit two free throws for the final 61-60 margin.  The senior, who is ranked in the top 50 seniors in the Women's Basketball Yearbook, finished with 34 points.

Wisconsin Lutheran Boys Basketball
– The defending Division 2 state champs were coming into the WBY Shootout off two straight losses to Nicolet and St. Paul Johnson.  Facing them at the Al McGuire center was fellow D2 ranked Catholic Memorial and the top ranked D1 team in Arrowhead.  The Vikings ended their two game skid in a big way, topping CMH by 2 and Arrowhead by 4 the following night.  Senior Flavien Davis took home tournament MVP honors and Wisconsin Lutheran re-established themselves as the team to beat in D2.
