Week 1 WisSports.net Coaches Poll

Division 1

It is no shock that defending champion Germantown debuts at #1 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. The Warhawks posted one of the best seasons in state history last year, and while they lost All-State guard Zak Showalter and some other talented players, head coach Steve Showalter has another impressive group. Luke Fischer, an Indiana recruit, had 28 points and 7 blocks in an opening win over Homestead, while Jake Showalter added 24. Deep, talented, big, and experienced, Germantown is once again the favorite. Last year's runner-up Milwaukee King is 2nd, while Appleton West is off to a very impressive start and comes in at #3. Milwaukee Vincent and Sun Prairie round out the top five.

Division 2

Onalaska returns one of the favorites for the Mr. Basketball award in senior Matt Thomas, and while Green Bay recruit Nick Arenz has graduated, the Hilltoppers get the edge to start the season despite not playing a game yet. As it was most of last year, Rice Lake is 2nd. Wally Ellenson has graduated but younger brothers Ellwood and Henry are strong scholarship prospects as well for the Warriors. Plymouth is off to a strong 3-0 start and is third, followed by Whitefish Bay and Catholic Memorial.

Division 3

Little Chute was #1 in the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook rankings, and solidified that ranking with a dominating win over D4's top-ranked team Dominican last week. Led by senior Green Bay recruits Turner Botz and Kenneth Lowe, the Mustangs are poised for a special season. East Troy loses 6-9 All-State selection Tanner Plomb but welcomes back twin towers Alex and Brett Prahl along with standout guard Nate Dodge, who has committed to Army. The Trojans are second followed by Wisconsin Dells, Lodi, and Racine St. Catherine's.

Division 4

Dominican captured the D4 championship in dominating fashion last year and have a lineup that once again may not be matched in the division. Senior guard Duane Wilson has committed to Marquette while sophomore big man Diamond Stone is ranked in the top five nationally in his class. There is uncertainty however as head coach Paul Wollersheim stepped down in a turbulent off-season and Derek Berger has taken over. The Knights lost to Little Chute last week but have enough talent to come back strong going forward. The rest of the top five consists of Southwestern, Brookfield Academy, Auburndale, and Cuba City.

Division 5

As it has been for seemingly two decades, Randolph enters the season ranked #1. Head coach Bob Haffele has another strong group, led by experienced seniors Jay Peters and Austin Retzlaff along with explosive sophomore guard Duke Vander Galien. Division 5 figures to be one of the more balanced divisions however, including the rest of the top five:  Royall, Clayton, Green Bay NEW Lutheran, and Drummond.
