Marathon girls basketball defeated a pair of ranked Marawood South teams to move into a tie for first in the conference. The Red Raiders are this week’s PlayintheDells.com Splash of the Week.
Marathon knocked off D5 No. 2 and defending state champ Assumption 47-46, scoring 5 points in the final 16 seconds.
Junior Emily Kind scored a team-high 14 points and added 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for the Red Raiders. Sophomore Natasha Hanke contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds for coach Jeff Schneider in the win.
Two days later Marathon defeated D5 No. 6 Newman Catholic 60-43. The Red Raiders outscored the Cardinals 34-16 in the middle quarters.
Kind finished with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. Hanke scored 16 points and 7 rebounds, while senior Morgan Wirkus also reached double figures, scoring 11.
Marathon moves to 15-1 overall and 8-1 in Marawood South play, which puts them in a tie for first place in the conference with Assumption.
