For the second time in as many seasons, Stoughton claimed the Division 1 championship at the WIAA Team Wrestling State Tournament at the UW Field House in Madison.

The top-seeded Vikings finished off a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 42-24 win over No. 2 Mukwonago in the championship tilt Saturday afternoon.

Stoughton won nine of 14 bouts, including seven bonus-point victories en route to its ninth state championship in program history.

Nicolar Rivera got the Vikings off to a fast start with a 17-3 major decision over Mukwonago’s Tyler Goebel at 113 pounds.

Dante Steinmetz made it 10-0 Stoughton with a pin at 120.

But the Indians fought back with back-to-back pins from Luke Eliszewski and Josiah Lynden to grab a 12-10 lead four bouts into the dual.

That lead was short-lived, however. From there, Stoughton rattle off a string of a five straight victories to claim a 33-12 advantage that proved to be insurmountable.

Ryan Krimpelbein (182) stopped the Vikings’ run with a 6-3 decision over Rudy Detweiler that marked Mukwonago’s third win of the dual.

But Brooks Empey (195) sealed the deal for Stoughton with a pin in the next match that secured the Vikings’ victory.

The win capped a 21-0 season for Stoughton who entered the weekend as the No. 49 team in the nation according to InterMat.

Saturday marked the second Team State title for the Vikings since the dual meet format was implemented in 1991.

A 50-21 win over No. 8 Arrowhead in Friday night’s quarterfinals followed by a 45-18 triumph over No. 5 Kaukauna propelled Stoughton to Saturday’s championship match.

The Vikings won 29 of the 42 individual matches across their three duals. Twenty-two of those victories were bonus-point wins.

Mukwonago ended the campaign with a 26-1 record and its first state runner-up finish in program history.
