Boys Hoops: Player, Team and Coach of the Week (Feb. 24-29)

Here are the Wisconsin Sports Network weekly award winners in boys' basketball for the games played February 24 through February 29:

Player of the Week


Matthew Marcinske

Matthew Marcinske, 6-1, Sr., G, Birchwood
Without a lot of fanfare, Birchwood senior guard Matthew Marcinske joined a select group last Thursday. The talented and extremely productive four-year varsity performer scored his 2,000th career point while helping the Bobcats of coach Blane Senn record a 75-65 triumph over Gilmanton. Marcinske scored 37 points, grabbed five rebounds, handed out five assists and came up with three steals in the contest. He also had 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 94-81 win over Mellen earlier in the week. Marcinske's strong showing in 2019-20 helped Birchwood (18-4) to the title in the Eastern Division of the Lakeland Conference and a No. 4 seed in the upper half of Sectional 1 in the WIAA Division 5 Tournament. Marcinske enters the playoffs with 2,027 career points after averaging 15.8 ppg as a freshman, 26.4 ppg as a sophomore, 23.8 ppg as a junior and 24.6 ppg this season.

Bryson Funmaker

Wisconsin Dells Chiefs
Needing a victory over South Central Conference-rival Mauston last Thursday in order to clinch the undisputed league title, Wisconsin Dells went out an posted a convincing 62-43 triumph over the visiting Golden Eagles. The Chiefs' 20th win a row this winter helped them finish two games ahead of Mauston in the final standings and secure their third league crown in succession. Wisconsin Dells is 29-1 within league play over the past three seasons under coach Brad Rohling. Senior guard Bryson Funmaker (5-9) was the catalyst for the Chiefs against Mauston as he finished with a team-high 22 points. Senior wing Brett Hirst (6-3) added 17 and sophomore guard Jacob Rockwell (5-9) contributed 14. Wisconsin Dells is 21-1 entering the playoffs and is seeded No. 1 in the lower half of Sectional 1 in the WIAA Division 3 field. The Chiefs will play the winner of Tuesday's regional quarterfinal contest between Westby (9-13) and Viroqua (9-12) on Friday in Wisconsin Dells. UW-Platteville recruit Sam Millard (6-8) is averaging 11.3 ppg and 5.1 rpg on the campaign for the Chiefs while Funmaker is averaging 11.7 ppg and 2.3 rpg. Hirst contributes 11.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 4.6 apg while senior Riley Eck (6-2) adds 8.0 ppg and 2.8 rpg. 

Coach of the Week

Kevin Bavery, Middleton
Now in his 29th season as head varsity boys' basketball coach, Kevin Bavery notched his 400th career victory recently by guiding Middleton to a 71-68 triumph over Janesville Craig. Middleton trailed by 14 points in the contest against Craig with seven minutes remaining, but scored the final 17 points of the contest to notch the triumph. Bavery later directed the Cardinals to a win over Monona Grove and enters the WIAA playoffs with a 401-228 career record. Bavery began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as an assistant at Oregon for seven years before becoming head coach and leading the Panthers to a 184-107 record in 13 seasons from 1991-2004. His 1999-00 squad won the Badger Conference championship and qualified for the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament, losing to New Berlin West in the semifinals. Bavery's final squad at Oregon in 2003-04 also won the Badger Conference title. He then spent two years at Cedarburg High School, finishing with a 20-23 record. Bavery is in his 14th season at Middleton and guided the Cardinals to the 2015-16 Big Eight Conference title.
