Sun Prairie West junior Chris Davis, Jr. made quite the impression this season, putting up some of the biggest scoring numbers we've ever seen.

Davis, Jr. nearly became just the fourth player in state history to reach 1000 points in a single season, finishing with 980 for the Wolves, which is the seventh-most all-time. Along the way he averaged 40.8 points per game in 24 contests, with a season-high of 61 points, tied for 18th-most in a single game in Wisconsin history.

Meanwhile, five players from Wisconsin's class of 2023 moved into the top 60 on the prestigious career scoring list, put together over the years by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and WisSports.net.

In addition, ten players moved onto the career scoring list, with a couple now in the top ten.

Below are the updated lists:

SINGLE-GAME SCORING RECORDS

Davis, Jr. was the only player to eclipse 60 points in a game during the 2023-24 campaign, going for a career-high 61 in late December as Sun Prairie West took down Carmen Northwest 103-91. Davis made 25-of-35 shots from the field, surprisingly connecting on just one, three-pointer. He did finish 10-of-14 from the free throw line, adding seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

It is a bit ironic that Davis, Jr. hit the mark against Carmen Northwest, as the current single-game record is held by Ta'Quorion Tribune, who poured in 77 points last year for the Eagles in a playoff win against Howard Fuller Academy.

SINGLE-SEASON SCORING LEADERS

Not surprisingly, with the increase in maximum game limits, more game time under halves, and faster pace, there were more entries on the single-season scoring list than any in state history. In fact, six of the top 32 scoring performances in Wisconsin history occurred during the 2023-24 campaign.

It was Chris Davis, Jr. that put together the biggest total this season, scoring 980 points in 24 games as the Wolves won the Big Eight Conference title. Averaging 40.8 points along the way, he scored less than 30 just once, a season-low 26 points. Had he not missed a game in the middle of the season, he likely would have been the fourth player (and fifth instance) to hit 1000 points in a single year.

Pewaukee's Nick Janowski capped off his brilliant career with 923 points as the Pirates were the Division 2 state runners-up after three consecutive titles. That is good for 12th on the state's list.

Other entries this year include Southern Door junior Drew Daoust with 885 (12th), G-E-T's Cody Schmitz with 843 (20th), Pius XI Catholic's Jaquan Johnson wtih 839 (21st), and Solon Springs' Isaiah Kastern with 838 (22nd).

CAREER SCORING RECORDS

Again, with more scoring opportunities than ever, and the impacts of shortened COVID seasons much less of a factor, there were more career scoring list entries than ever before.

Averaging at least 29 points per game the last three seasons, G-E-T's Cody Schmitz is now fourth on the career scoring list with 2,654 points. Were it not for playing just 13 games as a freshman when the team was limited by COVID restrictions, he could have ended up as high as third or even second.

Jaquan Johnson of Pius XI Catholic played in the same Woodland Conference as more heralded seniors Kon Knueppel of Wisconsin Lutheran and Nick Janowski of Pewaukee, but Johnson had a huge career for the Popes with 2,473 career points, placing him eight on the all-time list.

Speaking of Janowski, his 2,297 career points is 18th in state history. Amari McCottry of Saint Thomas More is 20th with 2,284 points.

Notably, Southern Door junior Drew Daoust is up to 2,225 career points already, which currently puts him 27th. He had 885 points in his junior season, if he were to repeat that figure next year, he'd move into second on the state's all-time list. He has an outside chance to challenge Anthony Pieper's (Wausaukee) career scoring record of 3,391 points that has stood for more than 30 years.

Others added to the list this year are Grafton's Michael McNabb, Jr. (2,157 points; 30th), Mauston's Brock Massey (2,153 points; 33rd), Oshkosh North's Stevie Clark (1,979 points; 67th), and Wisconsin Lutheran's Kon Knueppel (1,978 points; 68th).
