The WSN15 series will celebrate the 15th Anniversary of WisSports.net by looking back at the top players, teams, and moments of the past 15 years (2003-2017).
We begin our WSN15 girls' basketball series with the Top 15 Moments of the WSN Era.
South Shore is a tiny high school located near the shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin, and is best known in the sports world for producing the top two scorers in state history.
Eleven years separated Jolene Anderson (2004) and Megan Gustafson (2015), but their high school basketball achievements will keep them forever linked.
Anderson and Gustafson combined to score 6,110 points in their high school careers at South Shore High School and both led the Cardinals to a pair of state tournament appearances.
South Shore had an enrollment 95 students when Anderson was a senior. That number continued to drop and by the time Gustafson was a senior the school's enrollment was just 47.
During Anderson's senior year in 2004, she broke the state record of 2,601 career points held by former Niagara star Anna DeForge.
Jolene, who went on to play at the University of Wisconsin, would finish her career with a then state record of 2,881 points.
That record would stand for 11 years until Gustafson's senior year in 2015 when she entered the Cardinals' game against Chequamegon on February 16 needing 11 points to surpass Anderson's scoring record.
Megan moved into first-place on the state's all-time scoring list with a free throw at 7:40 in the second quarter. She finished the game with 46 points, including 44 through three quarters.
Gustafson finished her high school career with 3,229 points. This fall she enters her senior year at the University of Iowa.
The state scoring records also have Anderson and Gustafson at the top of the single-game and in the top three of the single-season scoring lists.
When the WSN15 series shifts to top players, you will be able to read more about their careers.
